Royal Caribbean quietly changed the rules on its Deluxe Beverage Package, and a lot of cruisers still don't know it.

Since last year, the cruise line closed a loophole that used to let one person in a stateroom buy the package while everyone else paid per drink. Now, if anyone in your cabin buys the Deluxe Beverage Package, every guest 21 and older sharing that stateroom must buy it too — no exceptions.

So what does it actually cost? The Deluxe Package, which covers cocktails, beer, wine and spirits up to $14 per drink (before gratuity), runs $70 to $125 per person per day, plus an automatic 18% gratuity. If you don't drink alcohol, the Refreshment Package — specialty coffee, juices, mocktails, bottled water and unlimited soda — costs around $29 per person per day before gratuity.

The question that actually matters is the break-even point: to make the Deluxe Package worth it versus paying per drink, you need to consume 5 to 7 drinks a day. With the Refreshment Package, that break-even drops to just 4 or 5 non-alcoholic drinks.

One move that's genuinely worth making: buying your package before you sail can cost up to 40% less than onboard pricing, and you can cancel penalty-free if you change your mind before boarding — so there's never a reason to wait until the last day. One more recent change: since this past March, the souvenir Coca-Cola cup and Freestyle machine access are no longer included in any package; they now cost $4.99 separately.

Before your next cruise, do the real math on how much you actually drink per day. If you won't hit the break-even point, you're probably better off paying per drink.
