Do You Really Need A Passport To Cruise?

Description

Planning a Caribbean cruise and wondering if you actually need a passport? This week I'm breaking down everything about cruise travel documents -tomorrow I'm covering the Disney Treasure.

On a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends at the same US port, you can technically sail with just a REAL ID-compliant license plus proof of citizenship. But Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line both strongly recommend a passport anyway -Disney recommends one for every guest, every sailing.

Here's the real risk: if you have to disembark early for a medical emergency or a missed ship, you cannot fly home from a foreign country without one. Renewing a passport book costs $130 and takes 4 to 6 weeks routine, or 2 to 3 weeks expedited for $60 more.

Passport and REAL ID rules can change, so always confirm current requirements before booking. Do you always travel with a passport? Tell me in the comments.
