Castaway Cay: Disney's Private Island In The Caribbean

September 14, 2026  ·  Peter Escamilla

Description

Castaway Cay covers 1,000 acres total, but Disney has only developed 55 of them for guests.

Follow me — tomorrow I'm breaking down why travel insurance isn't optional when you're planning a big trip.

This private island in the Bahamas runs on a 99-year land lease (signed in 1997, through 2096), and about 140 Disney Cruise Line crew members live there full-time to keep it ready every time a ship pulls in. It used to be called Gorda Cay and even showed up in the 1984 movie Splash.

Pelican Plunge, the floating inflatable slide structure, is free and unlimited for every guest - already included in your cruise fare. Want something more private? There are three cabana options: the Family Beach cabana ($963 for 6 guests), Grand Family ($1,375 for 10), and the adults-only Serenity Bay cabana ($523 for 4). All of them include free bikes and snorkel gear.
